BENEFITS OF VITAMIN D & C AND ABSORPTION

Did you know that only about 25% of Americans get their daily recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals? Just recently, it was reported in the news that Vitamin D and Vitamin C supplements can lessen 'your susceptibility to infection.'

Vitamin D, known as the "sunshine vitamin, has been produced on this earth for more than 500 million years. Vitamin D is actually produced by the skin cells when we are exposed to light (sun); however, the ability for the human body to produce and absorb Vitamin D decreases with age.

Vitamin D can help with your metabolism, mood and immunity

There have been multiple studies that consistently prove its effect on bone health and mineral metabolism. Vitamin D is  not only important for calcium metabolism and maintenance of bone health throughout life, but also plays an important role in reducing risk of many chronic diseases including: type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, deadly cancers, heart disease and infectious diseases, according to an article from PubMed.gov

"Vitamin D3, specifically, is primarily produced following exposure to ultraviolet B irradiation, with very little derived from dietary sources." (Source: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)  Basically, Vitamin D3 is obtained through sun exposure or specific  supplementation D3{You can also read about Vitamin D and sunlight here for a more scientific explanation of D3.}

It has also been reported that Vitamin D deficiency can lead to an increased risk of infection, particularly as it relates to respiratory diseases. "Vitamin D deficiency affects all age groups and demographics. 50-70% of children and adolescents are Vitamin D deficient.  It has also been reported that Vitamin D suppresses excessive cytokine release that can present as a cytokine storm, a common cause of serious viruses (such as COVID-related morbidity and mortality.) Therefore, “The higher your vitamin D status, the lower your chances of infection,” said Dr. Michael Holick, a Boston University doctor. Dr. Holick was recently featured in an article stating that "Vitamin D can help reduce coronavirus risk by 54%."

"A deficiency in the nutrient (Vitamin D) alters the immune system, making one more likely to get upper respiratory infections, Holick said.  According to Dr. Holick, “Vitamin D definitely improves your overall immunity to fight infections.”  Another study of more than 11,000 participants published in the British Medical Journal found vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of acute respiratory tract infection among all participants.

Another supplement we are all very familiar with is Vitamin CStudies show that it increases blood antioxidant levels, which helps the body’s natural defenses against inflammation. Vitamin C, is also known as ascorbic acid, and is a water-soluble nutrient found in some foods. "Vitamin C is an essential nutrient involved in the repair of tissue and the enzymatic production of certain neurotransmitters."

Here is a fact sheet regarding Vitamin C from the National Center of Bio-technology Information.

The key to adding these and other supplements to our body is ABSORPTION!  Our bodies are made up of almost 65% water and so therefore, when we add vitamins and supplements that are hydrophobic, we are not getting what our bodies need.  Hydrophobic literally means “the fear of water." Hydrophobic molecules and surfaces repel water. Hydrophobic liquids, such as oil, will separate from water.

What we need are vitamins and supplements that are hydrophilic, (molecule or substance) which means they are attracted to water, so it naturally absorbs in our body and can help us to boost our immune system effectively

I must also mention, that having a healthy gut is an important factor in maintaining a healthy body.  "Research has shown that a flourishing population of beneficial gut bacteria can help your immune cells differentiate between normal healthy cells and harmful invaders. Gut micro-biota provides essential health benefits to the host, particularly by regulating immune homeostasis, and it has become obvious that alterations of the gut microbial communities can cause immune dysregulation, leading to autoimmune disorders, among others" (Source: World Health.net)
